Awards and Scholarships

The Department of Chemistry offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for our graduate students. Additional scholarships and fellowships are offered through the Toulouse Graduate School and the College of Science. Applications are usually due the beginning of February.

Most scholarships require recommendation letters. Your recommenders will receive instructions about how to submit recommendation letters.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY GRADUATE AWARDS

These awards consist of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate. All scholarship awardees are recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held at the end of April. To be eligible, you must submit your application through the COS scholarship application site.


CHEMISTRY CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION STUDENT ENDOWMENT

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter
  • Complete FAFSA

This scholarship was created and funded by our alumni and faculty in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Chemistry Department. The award is open to both undergraduate and graduate Chemistry students, and recognizes excellence in academic achievement and financial need. The scholarship alternates annually between graduate and undergraduate students.


R.B. ESCUE CHEMISTRY EDUCATION RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter

This award was endowed by Dr. R.B. Escue, UNT Alumnus and Faculty Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry at UNT. It was first awarded in 2007.

This award is given to the outstanding Chemistry graduate student pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemistry who shows strong emphasis in teaching. Consideration will be given to the student's teaching experience and evaluation.


ED AND JULIA HODGES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Completed 6010 Sequence.
  • Must be returning for full academic year after scholarship is awarded
  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter

Given first in 2007, the Ed and Julia Hodges Memorial Scholarship will be available to outstanding graduate students in the Department of Chemistry. This award is awarded to Doctoral students who have made significant progress in their graduate school academics including research via publications, presentations, grades, etc.


TINA MEWHINNEY SCHOLARSHIP FOR Ph.D. STUDIES IN CHEMICAL EDUCATION

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • PhD focus in Chemistry Education
  • COS Application
  • Essay: Your Goals in Education
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter

This award was endowed by UNT Chemical Education alumni, Dr. Christina Mewhinney. This award recognizes excellence in Chemistry education and academic achievement and was awarded for the first time in Spring 2017.


JAMES J. AND RUTH I. SPURLOCK SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • Full-Time Chemistry Grad Student
  • G.P.A of 3.5 or Higher
  • Demonstrate Superior Research Abilities - Recommendation letter from research advisor and other appropriate means approved by the Chemistry Department

This scholarship is given for outstanding research achievement by a graduate student in Chemistry. This award was established in 1992 by Ruth I. Spurlock and first awarded in 1994.


GEORGE VAUGHAN MEMORIAL AWARD

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter

This award is given to the outstanding first- or second-year graduate student in the department. This award was established by Herman Vaughan in memory of his brother, Dr. George Vaughan.


Schwartz Graduate Scholarship in Honor of Betty Schwartz

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Two Recommendation Letters

The award will be given to a first-year graduate student in an M.S. or Ph.D program with intent to study physical chemistry.

Professor Martin Schwartz was an internationally recognized physical chemist and accomplished scholar, having published over 125 peer-reviewed research articles. Dr. Schwartz also directed or served on the advisory committees of over 150 M.S. and Ph.D. students, in addition to serving as a mentor for countless undergraduate and TAMS students throughout his 44-year tenure at UNT. Research and teaching were his passion. The endowment is meant to benefit students who embody the qualities which Dr. Schwartz admired.


Sapphire T McGillicuddy & Spooky McSchwartz Esq. Graduate Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Two Recommendation Letters

The award will be given to a first-year graduate student in an M.S. or Ph.D program with intent to study physical chemistry.

This scholarship was set up in memory of Professor Martin Schwartz.


COLLEGE OF SCIENCE GRADUATE AWARDS

JOHN A. ALTERMANN AND KATHERINE M. BRADFORD SCHOLARSHIP
To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Two Letters of Recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant's academic work
  • Provide transcripts of all college work
  • Provide narrative statement discussing career goals, work record, and extracurricular activities

This is a College of Science Award which is awarded to a graduate student in Chemistry, Biology, Math or Physics. It is rotated so each department has a recipient every four years beginning with Chemistry in 2008. Recipient of scholarship will be chosen based on overall achievement.


DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE AWARD

ROBERT WADE BROWN AWARD
To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter

This award is given to the outstanding undergraduate or graduate student who has most helped the Chemistry Department through his or her service activities. This award was established by Robert Wade Brown and was first awarded in 1985.


TEACHING AWARDS

These Awards are given by Alpha Chi Sigma, Beta Eta Chapter. The awardees are recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held at the end of April.

OUTSTANDING FRESHMAN LEVEL T.A. AWARD
This award is given to the outstanding T.A. in the freshman level labs.

OUTSTANDING UPPER-LEVEL T.A. AWARD
This award is given to the outstanding T.A. in the upper-level labs.
